A heritage in motion

More than a century of bicycle manufacturing.

  1. Production begins in Sangerhausen

The Mitteldeutsche Fahrradwerke are founded in 1907, marking the beginning of bicycle manufacturing at the site. The factory soon earns a reputation well beyond the region.

  2. MIFA makes its mark in cycling

During the 1920s, MIFA earns recognition across Germany and beyond. Products from Sangerhausen come to represent robust engineering, industrial production and sporting ambition.

  3. Bicycles for millions of riders

In the second half of the twentieth century, Sangerhausen grows into one of Europe’s major bicycle production centres. More than nine million bicycles leave the factory, including around 1.5 million of its now iconic folding bikes.

  4. Industrial momentum returns

A new period of growth begins in 1996. Output rises from around 50,000 bicycles in the first year to several hundred thousand within a few years, re-establishing Sangerhausen as a major German production centre.

  5. Automotive methods enter e-bike production

The Smart e-bike is designed in Sangerhausen and put into volume production for Daimler AG. A dedicated production line brings automotive manufacturing methods into bicycle production at an early stage.

  6. Sachsenring continues production

The workforce and production facilities continue under the Sachsenring Bike Manufaktur name, manufacturing for established brands, premium projects and modern mobility services.

  7. Keeway Group takes over the Sangerhausen site

In 2021, Keeway Group acquires the entire Sangerhausen facility and continues operations under the Zweirad Union name. Joining an international automotive and mobility group gives the site a long-term industrial future.
